In addition to providing an overview of Tech SAG and updates on 20206 plans and working groups (AI, Animal Behavior Monitoring, Customer Relationship Management systems, Data Analytics, Data Literacy, GIS, Tech Toolbox, & Sustainable Technology), Tech SAG officers will be facilitating a short unconference. An unconference is an informal participant-oriented meeting—where attendees decide on the agenda, discussion topics, and time allotments—that prioritizes discussions over presentations.
Come prepared to suggest technology-related topics of interest to you. Based on suggestions, Tech SAG officers will work with participants to quickly pull together either concurrent or full group sessions for the remainder of the time. Example session types might include 1) developing draft deliverables (e.g., a list of best practices or resources), 2) following “Ignite” format presentations without slides on a topic and following-up with discussion or 3) following a fishbowl discussion format on a topic.

1:00 PM - 5:00 PM Biobanking SAG & Molecular Data for Population Management SAG
This hands-on, interactive session on biobanking — open to all — will bring the zoo community together to build a shared understanding of the scope and impact of biobanking, discuss our most pressing needs, provide a clear landscape of ongoing initiatives and resources, and co-develop a framework for stronger communication and coordination across emerging biobanking efforts.
  • 1-2 PM – Building a shared understanding of biobanking
This session will open with a presentation that anchors participants in core biobanking concepts — what it is, why it matters — followed by an interactive exercise to explore how your organization fits into "coordinated biobanking" with the zoo and aquarium community. This hour is designed to help you recognize the work you're already doing and why it counts.
  • 2-3 PM – Interactive identification of barriers and prioritization of solutions
Participants will discuss challenges and opportunities for coordination across a variety of areas, from legal and regulatory barriers to cultural and infrastructure challenges, and then vote to prioritize the 3–5 solutions with the greatest community-wide impact.
  • 3-5 PM – Collaboratively map biobanking efforts and design pathways for communication
This working session will highlight existing efforts and then collaboratively develop some practical workflows for ongoing communication and coordination. We'll close by reviewing shared norms so we can start moving as one voice across the emerging biobanking landscape.
We’ll have a short break between the 2nd and 3rd sessions. No biobanking experience necessary. If you work with animals or their data, you have a seat at this table!

Just Culture is a concept that has gained interest in AZA in recent years. Up to this point, presentations and training have been primarily focused on safety outcomes but at several zoos, these concepts have been integrated into all aspects of workplace culture, improving outcomes for staff engagement and success across departments. At this workshop, facilitators will present an overview of the basic pillars of their approach, including psychological safety, blameless reporting, building better systems, and continuous improvement. Presentations will include tools, data, and case studies on how implementation of these concepts can improve results across your organization.
