These virtual meetings are open to all wishing to attend! Hear updates from various AZA Committees, Taxon Advisory Groups (TAGs), Species Survival Plans (SSPs), Scientific Advisory Groups (SAGs), and Saving Animals From Extinction (SAFE) Programs.

Monday, March 22

This session will include updates on the status of the Ape SSP programs (bonobo, chimpanzee, gibbon/siamang, gorilla, and orangutan); the SAFE programs for chimpanzee, gorilla, and orangutan; a TAG Veterinary Advisor report; and information on several of the TAG’s new initiatives, including Strategic Planning, Research Review Process, and Web Site refresh. There will also be time for Q&A with the session participants.

The MFTAG Midyear meeting will provide updates and discussions on many of the MFTAG programs and activities since our last meeting during the AZA Annual Conference in September 2020. TAG and Program IRs, Steering Committee members and Advisors, Program leaders and anyone interested are welcome to join the meeting.

Open meeting for all AZA institutions, especially those holding Small Carnivores. This will be a reporting meeting to update the attendees on the status of the TAG, Regional Collection Plan, SSPs’ populations, and the SSPs’ activities.
1:00 pm - 2:00 pm Animal Population Management Committee General Updates
This is a high-level overview of the committee’s work on their strategic plan. It is geared towards those who do not typically attend APMC update meetings or Animal Program meetings. The target audience includes individuals working on other AZA Committees, educators, public relations and marketing professionals, etc. This is not intended for Program Leaders.

1:30 pm - 4:30 pm Small Population Management Advisory Group (SPMAG)
During this meeting, SPMAG will first provide an update on our activities since the September meeting, describe and discuss the draft strategic action plan, and welcome volunteers to lead our initiatives. We will spend a portion of the meeting in break out rooms brainstorming and refining the potential roles and activities for the SPMAG TAG Liaison position. Finally, we will hear updates from a number of SPMAG members on their individual program, research, and population management activities.

2:30 pm - 3:30 pm SAFE: Sharing the Landscape
During this session, panelists will discuss the successes and challenges of orangutan conservation during a pandemic, updates from the Asian hornbills program and activities planned by field partners, an overview of the black rhino program and work that will be supported with an AZA SAFE grant, and updates from the lion program.

4:00 pm - 5:00 pm Reproduction & Endocrinology SAG
We welcome you to join us as we provide an overview of the Reproduction & Endocrinology SAG, our initiatives, available resources, and how you can be involved. Our mission is to develop cooperative relationships between AZA, its Animal Programs, its accredited institutions, and the scientific community of reproduction and endocrine specialists and provide technical advice to enhance reproduction services for AZA Animal Programs. This is a great opportunity to ask questions of our panelists during the Q&A.

4:30 pm - 5:30 pm Social Science Research & Evaluation SAG
Members of the Social Science Research and Evaluation Scientific Advisory Group (SSRE SAG) Steering Committee will share updates from the past six months including topline results from the Needs Assessment regarding social science research and evaluation, subcommittee reports (Communication, Professional Development, Ethical Practices and Collaboration), next steps and additional opportunities for involvement and discussion.
4:30 pm - 5:30 pm Animal Welfare Task Force - Road Show and Listening/Feedback Session
Each Welfare Task Force session will be similar so please attend one of the three sessions offered during the week. In each session, members of the AZA Animal Welfare Vision and Strategy Task Force will share why the task force exists, the charter of the task force from the AZA Board, the make-up of the Task Force, and more. Participants will then join breakout rooms to provide feedback on priorities and direction for the Task Force. This is a great opportunity for all members of our professional community to provide insight into this important work for our collective future. All members of the zoo and aquarium profession in all roles/jobs are invited to attend and provide feedback.

This session will focus on SSP achievements in 2020 as well as things we are working on in 2021. Several of our SSP advisors will be on the panel to present and discuss information pertaining to CoVID19 protocols, reproduction and assisted reproductive technologies, the ongoing AZA review of the BFF program and an update on the Conata Basin/Badlands reintroduction site in South Dakota. Join us as we celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Black-footed Ferret Rediscovery!

This will be an open meeting for Program Partners or those interested in Andean bear SAFE. 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm SAFE: Orangutan - Planning a Paradigm Shift in Orangutan Conservation
The Orangutan SAFE Program, along with our partners at HUTAN, Wildlife Impact, and Borneo Futures, was awarded a grant to increase our understanding of the importance of orangutans in forest patches within agricultural landscapes, to develop models that show the effect of translocations as a common tool for mitigating human-orangutan conflict, and to create outreach materials for a variety of stakeholders to share the results of this potentially transformational research. We will briefly discuss the project and then solicit input from attendees regarding what tools would be most useful to them for engaging with zoo visitors and the general public on orangutan conservation issues.

This session is jointly facilitated by the Human Resources and Professional Development Committees for currently employed or AZA alumni. If you or your team have been impacted by furloughs or job loss due to COVID, we invite you to participate in a listening session. Your input will be used to create webinars and additional resources to support people in our AZA community during this transitory time and beyond. With your insight, we can provide relevant and actionable support with positive impact for our collective mission-driven work.
